The Bethesda location of the Tastee Diner was originally located on Wisconsin Avenue in 1935. In 1958, they picked up the diner and moved it to its current location on Woodmont Avenue. The original dining car consists of the six booths and counter stools, the addition was put on in 1979. There has been 3 owners of the Tastee Diner, Mr. Warner, Mr. Carver and current owner Gene Wilkes. Mr. Wilkes has been the owner since 1970.
This particular diner was built and designed by Jerry O’Mahoney. In it’s day it was considered the “Cadillac” of dining cars. Diners were first started to move from location to location so that it would be easier for diners to grab a quick bite in different locations.
Throughout the years Bethesda has changed dramatically, but the diner has remained the same. Always open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except for Christmas, with one exception, “The Fire” in 2002. During “The Fire” Bethesda was closed 100 days.
The Tastee Diner has had the distinction of of serving many celebrities, to name a few; John F. Kennedy Jr and his girlfriend Caroline Bissett, Julie Louis Dreyfus, John Ratzenberger, Julia Child and Annie Leibowitz. Bethesda has also had a few politcians join us for meals, such as Chelsea Clinton, Sandy Berger, Josh Bolton and Chief Justice John Roberts, just to name a few.
The one thing that remains the same to this day is our wonderful and loyal customers.
